Dichomtomy

Taking a break from my "church bashing" as some may call it to look at the most risible case of denial that exists  in the world today and here is the problem: we are called to embrace other religions/cultures without any comment or criticism. We are also called to embrace alternative life-styles and those who practice them without any criticism. "Why is that a problem?" I hear you cry! Isn't this perfect the fact we accept people irrespective of creed, culture, colour, sexual orientation, size, shape etc., etc., to me that is commendable. However, to accept without comment is not, let me give you a safe example to begin with: A plus-size model, usually a young person, who promotes their size as well as their looks; "Big is Beautiful" isn't it? Well yes it is but doctors question that the glorification of what is obesity sends the wrong message, particularly in light of the obesity epidemic that the West is facing. If we don't educate people to the fact that choosing to be overweight, making it cool to accept that being big is not a problem, this could actually encourage others to remain the same. There is both an individual problem here - being overweight is the second biggest cause of cancer, the biggest cause of diabetes type 2, a major factor in some people with depression - and a societal problem: we are being told to cut weight to be more healthy, if being overweight is sexy, cool or not a problem, those who struggle with weight (myself included) will see this as an excuse to stop the fight against obesity.

Now for a more politically incorrect example, one that is constantly completely ignored by society, or perhaps brushed under the covers as people don't want to face it: We say that we must accept Islam in our society, not that we need to be Muslim, but we "live and let live." However, it is an incontrovertible fact that Islam teaches:
  1. That homosexuality is wrong and must be punished with death by stoning;
  2. That women are not equal to men, indeed wives are supposed to walk so many paces behind their husbands.
Both of these are taught by the Koran, but to add fuel to the flames, the Koran teaches women to dress modestly, not to cover themselves up with a burka or hijab, that is cultural requirement, not one of the Koran!

So how does all this sit with the Rainbow Alliance or the Equality Commission? How does this reconcile with those who believe in equality of the sexes and the emancipation of homosexuals? Trouble is the champions of global equality in all things either refuse to ask the question, or ignore that the question even exists. If anyone else asks the question they are vilified; labelled as a racist, homphobic or worse. The other response is to look for some Muslim scholar somewhere who supports their view that none of this is in the Koran, or that the Koran doesn't really say these things. I am no scholar of Islam, but I have read a translation and a commentary by two leading Islamic scholars who do a good job trying to gloss over these things, but struggle to refute that the Koran does contain these things.

My theory is that the real root of the problem is the fact that the liberal left doesn't actually believe in equality, especially where freedom of speech with deaths concerned. You can have an opinion, providing it supports their opinion, otherwise you are some sort of narrow-minded bigot.
