Apocolypse Now: PLEASE!

"and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter."

It may seem quite strange desiring this kind of apocalyptic scene that the Holy Bible tells us proceeds the return of Christ but frankly, I have had enough of the insanity that is gripping this world with it's icy hand. If you believe in the devil (and your a fool if you don't) then you can easily see him at work! How much he must revel in humanity driving itself into oblivion as it tries to control and define everything. It started within its own species; travelling the world and conquering and enslaving other peoples on an industrial scale. Then it moved onto the world itself; pillaging its natural resources to fuel its growth, fill its coffers, and to build more powerful nation-conquering weapons, and as a consequence ruining the environment. In the name of progress landscapes were changed beyond recognition and repair, cultures were destroyed, and whole races and species disappeared off of the face of the earth. When wars had run their course in the west, the new battlefield was money and fame; sought after rabidly by those who didn't have it, and coveted by those who had. When the stain of this preoccupation with success at the cost of anything, particularly those who stood in ones way, had indelibly stained our morality as a species we began to look evermore inward; changing our bodies with cosmetics and colours. When this didn't do the trick we moved onto body-art, such as tattoo's and piercings, and ever-more radical plastic surgery. Emancipation of "alternative" sexuality such as LBGT is a good thing, people often do not align to the gender stereotypes society imposes upon them, but what about 'Q' or "Questioning". As a teen I wasn't sure what my sexuality was, but it seems that puberty about being given to make a choice. The problem with this approach is dangerous, in the same way that medical advances that allow people to genetically engineer offspring to eliminate diseases is being skewed to allow people to chose the gender of a child, not because of medical necessity but because of preference. From despotic, nationalistic, empire builders, we are morphing into a dichotomy, and neither position marks the pinnacle of human achievement. 

Mahatma Ghandi apparently once said "live and let live", I don't believe this phrase originated with him but his credentials should give him some claim to this phrase. The reality is that utopic world this phrase calls for can never happen, we are not striving towards perfection but irrelevance. Which is why I cry out for a reboot, a resetting of the world, a radical event that will make everyone stop what they are doing (either to themselves and to others) and cause them to realise that whatever it is it doesn't matter. I yearn for "hail and fire, mixed with blood" to be thrown on the earth, and a third of the earth to be burned up, and a third of the trees and all green grass. I long for 'a great mountain, burning with fire, to be thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea to become blood. A third of the living creatures in the sea to die, and a third of the ships to be destroyed.' I desire it all, even though I am not sure what Christ will make of me, if I will be among the saved or cursed. It doesn't matter because I am thinking about this planet and the creatures and the people that inhabit it. 


I want, "a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

I want all this and everything that is promised, even if I am not a part of it! Our world is well and truly fucked, this is the only answer!

Pompus?

Reading James the other day I was quite surprised to find the word “religious”. There in the midst of my favourite book of the Bible was a word that frequent readers of my blog will know often raises some comment from myself, if not my hackles, especially in a 21 st  century context. So, when I saw it there, having never noticed it before for some reason, I had to do some digging (vernacular for research) on why this word was used. A quick search revealed that “religious”, or “religion” is not a common word in the Bible, in fact it is only used 6 times, twice in James in quick session, three times in Acts, once in Colossians. Choose the Red Pill!

  What we read in the closing chapters of Deuteronomy is both amazing and terrifying; God knew that in spite of all he had done and was about to do for Israel, that the people would still go ahead and rebel. He knew that they would, they knew that they would, and they knew that he knew they would, but they still did it. For me this speaks volumes about two things:  One is that we have complete and total free will before God, I utterly reject the doctrine of predestination because I believe that no matter how you package it, or what intellectual gymnastics you do with it, this cannot allow for free will. Preaching to the Converted

As I have done myself of numerous occasions along with multitudes of preachers in a church context, I delivered sermons that were just telling people what they know already, telling them how it was. Yes this often involved clarifying points of scripture and encouraging people in their faith, but the messages whilst not falling on deaf ears was generally just going over somewhat familiar ground but in a new way. What we might call 'Preaching to the Converted'. However, in some cases a preacher will actually challenge the converted, assaulting the listeners ears and their faith, and getting them to ask themselves where they actually stand with God.
