Difficult Decisions

It is interesting that I follow yesterdays blog about King David, with a focus on one of the psalms. Psalm 46 begins,

"God is our refuge and strength,

a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way,

though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam,

though the mountains tremble at its swelling."

It reassures us that whatever our situation God is there, not just to help us but to provide us a refuge. This year of 2025 seems to be a year of difficult decisions for me and this week was no different, I have spent several weeks trying to make an very difficult decision and where did I find the help that I need? In scripture, in the God-breathed word that can also be a help, a refuge, and our strength when we are struggling. The thing is I didn't open the Bible to look for an answer, the answer came to me, and that is a testament to the need for us to not just read, but to study and to absorb, so that when we need help scripture may come to us with that help. I studied scripture at bible college, I have listened to hundreds of sermons, and given dozens of my own, and have spent many hours blogging about faith and scripture, so when I really needed help in a tight situation the answer came to me, because that knowledge was part of me.

My eldest brother Dave has been a body-builder all his life, he has even owned his own gym's, and he is a great example of what athletes call "muscle memory". He can be out of the gym for months, then go back in and workout and the next day look buffed, not bad for a nearly 70-year old. At that's the same as scripture, whilst it's not about muscle memory per se; if we devote time to scripture, which is sometimes a real task when we don't feel like it, when we are looking for answers, guidance, or consolation, for us or others, all that time we have devoted to it will often be repaid even without trying. So I praise God for his Word, I thank God that I have access to it, and that I have had the time to study it, absorb it, and appreciate it's value.
